Welcome to our cloud forest Lodge

Let’s take a look around before you even unpack your binoculars.

Cabañas Tamiaju is a cozy cloud forest lodge in Ecuador’s Quijos Valley, where mist rolls through the trees, tanagers call from the canopy, and your cabin comes with both a hot shower and our awesome hospitality (wink nudge). We’re budget-friendly (no luxury price tags here), but you’ll still sleep in real beds with fluffy pillows, not hammocks strung between posts that may or may not be termite filled. .

We think our cabins are pretty cute, and we hope you’ll think so too. Standard cabins have two cozy beds, a private bathroom with a hot shower, and were built with simplicity, care, and your comfort in mind. The suite is a bit more plush, with a sofa bed, a king-size bed, and huge picture windows looking out over the valley, plus a private bathroom complete with a bathtub.

Tamiaju isn’t a remote jungle hideout, it’s a birdwatcher, and budget friendly cloud forest lodge in Ecuador, tucked into Barrio Chontas, a small neighborhood right off the main road between Quito and Tena. You’ll be tucked into a lived-in, local community full of personality, friendly neighbors, and the occasional rooster.

Tour our lodge in Ecuador’s Cloud Forest

Here’s the deal: we’re not a luxury resort with infinity pools. We’re a budget-friendly cloud forest lodge where you get real beds, hot showers, clean cabins, and nature at your doorstep. Cabins start at $50/night, with discounts if you stay longer or come solo. Translation: you can afford to stay long enough for the forest to slow your heartbeat to bird-watching pace.

Kitchen/ Dining Room
The Tamiaju dining room with colorful tablecloths and big windows looking into the forest

We know that the first way to your heart is through great birds, and the second is through great food. Why not do both at the same time! The dining room has big picture windows that allow for multitasking birdwatching and eating.

Standard Cabins
Wide-angle view of a rustic cabin interior at Cabañas Tamiaju with two beds, vibrant striped blankets, wood floors, and wraparound windows.

We’ve come pretty far from Eladio’s chainsaw building ways. These cabins are rustic, comfortable, affordable, and clean. All of our standard cabins have the same setup, one full size bed, and one twin, and a private bathroom with a hot shower. But each cabin has its own personality and color scheme.

The Suite
Spacious wooden cabin room with king bed, large window, and sofa at Cabañas Tamiaju

If you’re looking to upgrade your cabin life, the suite’s got you covered. It’s spacious, cozy, and filled with natural light, with a comfy king bed for starfish sleeping. There’s also a couch for lounging, a stone-accented private bathroom, and (plot twist!) it’s actually two rooms—one with the toilet and sink, the other with a big ol’ shower and tub.

Hummingbird Platform
Male Gorgeted Woodstar perched on a twig, displaying iridescent pink and violet throat feathers against a soft green background.

There’s no better place to geek out on hummingbirds. With heart rates exceeding 1,200 bpm and wingbeats up to 80 times per second, these birds push the physiological limits of vertebrate life. At our platform, you can normally observe 10 species, including the dazzling Gorgeted Woodstar and feisty Chestnut-breasted Coronet. Bring your camera… or just your sense of awe, we’ll provide the bean water.

Greenhouses
Rows of green bean plants growing tall inside a greenhouse, forming a leafy corridor along a narrow dirt path.

Farm to table, in 30 meters. We grow a rotating mix of beans, spuds, uvilla (goldenberry), and other local staples, plus a whole lineup of fresh herbs for teas and our dishes. Everything is nourished with rich, homemade worm compost. You don’t have to help us weed, but we won’t be mad if you do.

Tamiaju Trails
Two hikers stand on a lush jungle trail, gazing up at the dense green canopy above them.

Cross the bridge (built by our very own local legend Eladio) and step into 10 acres of green. There’s a chill trail below, a huffy-puffy trail to the top, and another loop where you can catch your breath. Birds? Yep. Weird mushrooms? Probably. Bring your field notebook and have fun!

Let’s talk pricing:

We like to think we’re the goldilocks of lodges, not so cheep you wonder what you’re going to find under the bed, but not so expensive you’re trying to figure out how to fit in a dog crate and fly as baggage. We have worked hard to provide you a quality stay at an excellent price point, so here is the breakdown.

Nightly Rates, per cabin

Our cabins are priced per cabin, not per person. Solo travelers get a little love, and the longer you stay, the more you save.

Standard Cabin$50/night
Suite$80/night
Solo traveler special: Standard $40/night, Suite $70/night

Stay Longer, Save More

We apply an automatic length-of-stay discount to your nightly rate:

  • 1–2 nights: full price (Standard $50 / Suite $80)

  • 3–4 nights: 10% off (Standard $45 / Suite $72)

  • 5–6 nights: 15% off (Standard $42.50 / Suite $68)

  • 7+ nights: 20% off (Standard $40 / Suite $64)

Solo travelers: We’ll always give you the better price—your solo rate or the long-stay discount, whichever is lower.
Example: Suite solo = $70/night for 1–4 nights; at 5–6 nights the long-stay price ($68) beats the solo rate, and at 7+ nights it drops to $64.
